Amid tensions with Pakistan, India will conduct a blackout drill tonight, Sunday (May 4), in the Firozpur military cantonment of Punjab and surrounding areas.
According to news outlet NDTV, the blackout drill will be carried out by cutting off power supply in the Firozpur cantonment area of Punjab from 9:00 PM to 9:30 PM local time.
To ensure the drill is carried out successfully, the Chief Executive Officer of the Firozpur Cantonment has sought assistance and cooperation from the local Deputy Commissioner and the Station Headquarters.
The officer has also requested the Punjab State Power Corporation to cut off the power supply during the drill period. Additionally, a letter has been issued by the cantonment board official to ensure adequate security measures are in place during the drill.Regarding the purpose of the drill, it was stated: “The aim is to ensure preparedness and effectiveness in implementing blackout procedures during an ongoing threat of war.”
According to NDTV, to inform the general public about the blackout, a man was reportedly seen making announcements in various areas using a battery-powered rickshaw.
On April 22, 26 people were killed in a gunmen attack in Pahalgam, located in India-administered Jammu and Kashmir. India accused Pakistan of being indirectly involved in the incident. In response, India took a series of measures, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the border, and canceling visas for Pakistani citizens. This escalated tensions between the two countries.
Pakistan retaliated by implementing its own measures, including closing the border and scrapping the Simla Agreement with India.Since the attack, a war-like situation has persisted between the two nations. For the past ten nights, the sound of gunfire has been heard along the border, although no major clashes have occurred so far.
